Driving is one of the best life skills you could ever learn. When you know how to drive, you can travel comfortably to different places. In Singapore, although they have metro and bus transport, it is generally a great city to drive. If you are planning to get a driver’s license after moving to Singapore, here is a comprehensive guide for you. Whether you are a first-time driver or you already have an existing driver’s license of your origin, let this guide you on how to get a SG driver’s license!
For drivers for the first time
Singapore allows foreigners to obtain a driver’s license. For those of you who are new to driving, you will need to be 18 years old and pass a set of tests:
Basic theory test
This mandatory test is required to obtain a driver’s license in Singapore. Both first-time drivers and foreigners wishing to switch to a Singaporean driving license must be able to pass this test.
Final theoretical test
After passing the basic theoretical test, you will need to take the FTT to obtain a temporary driver’s license (PDL), which allows you to drive on public roads with a driving instructor. You will have a driver to train the “L” sign. This is the last test before the traffic police test. The FTT consists of 50 multiple choice questions and you must achieve at least 90% to pass the test.
Practical driving test
The practical driving test (PDT) is conducted by qualified instructors appointed by the Singapore Police Department. The first part will be an initial assessment of driving skills, and the second part will be conducted on public roads. Driving errors mean that points will be deducted from your score.
Once you have passed the practice test, you can now apply for a Qualified Driver’s License (QDL) online. For foreigners with valid work cards issued by the Ministry of Labor (MOM) or student passes / long-term visits issued by the Immigration Checkpoints (ICA), you can apply for your QDL online using your own Singpass account.
For those who have passed the practice test but do not qualify for Singlass (with work permit holders and student pass holders), apply for QDL online using the following data to log in:
FIN number BirthdateCard Serial number
Note: Make sure you apply for and pay for your QDL online, otherwise you will not be allowed to drive or drive.
For those with an existing driver’s license
For those who already know how to drive and have an existing driver’s license, you need to convert your foreign driver’s license to Singaporean. To do this, you will also need to pass a basic theoretical test. After booking your BTT at any accredited driving center in Singapore, you must apply for a conversion.
Carry the following requirements to apply in person for transformation in the Traffic Police Examination Center:
Original and photocopy of passport and NRIC / entry permit / work pass / maintenance pass / pass for social visits / work permit Original and photocopy of a valid foreign driver’s license Matte and color photo with passport size with white background $ 50 fee for processing (only via CashCard and NETS)
For those with a non-English driver’s license, you will need:
International driving license or official English translation by the relevant embassy, commission or Singapore-registered translation companies (translation not required for licenses from Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia)
For those with a license that does not have a 1st date of issue, obtain an extract from the driver’s license entry from the licensing authority
You will be on probation for one year after obtaining a license in Singapore. Make sure you do not have more than 12 negative points or your booklet may be revoked. Show your trial plate for one year. The driver’s license for foreigners in Singapore will be valid for 5 years from the date of issue. Renew one month before the expiration date.
