Its your driver’s license expiring soon? With the change in quarantine classifications due to the pandemic, there have been some changes in the way we normally renew our driver’s licenses. To make it safe and convenient for all motorists, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) came up with an online form to renew driver’s licenses in a paperless, non-face-to-face manner. For those who are abroad and need to renew their licenses as well, you are in the right place.

If you’re thinking of renewing your license at some point, read the step-by-step guide on how to renew your driver’s license in the Philippines this 2021.

DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL ELIGIBILITY.

Motorists who are in the Philippines or abroad may be eligible to renew their driver’s license. However, there are different sets of rules and requirements to follow for each. Read on to know more.

The following are qualified to renew a driver’s license:

  1. Those who have a Non-Professional Driver’s License (NPDL), Professional Driver’s License (PDL), and Driver’s License that is not expired for two (2) years or more.
  2. Those with NPDL, PDL, and Driver’s License who intend to leave the country with a license due for renewal within one (1) year.

DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS

There are different requirements for those renewing their license in the Philippines or abroad. Read below and take note:

For drivers residing in the Philippines:

  • Your original NPDL/PDL license.
  • A copy of your medical certificate (transmitted electronically from the accredited clinic to the LTO office)

Note: You can only obtain a medical certificate from any of the LTO accredited clinics. See the full list here.

For Filipino drivers currently living abroad:

  • A photocopy of your passport (be sure to capture the first page, visa page, departure from the Philippines and last arrival abroad).
  • Your original letter of authorization to an authorized representative. Your personal attendance within 30 days of arrival at the office where you renewed.
  • your driver’s license to capture your photo. Bring the following requirements:
  • A copy of your medical certificate (transmitted electronically by the accredited clinic to the LTO office).
  • Your original and one (1) photocopy of your passport (first page and arrival page).
  • Your original official handwritten receipt (OR) which is your temporary driver’s license.

Note: Holders of valid foreign licenses are authorized to drive a motor vehicle within ninety (90) days from the date of arrival. You may then apply for license conversion if your visa is valid for at least thirty (30) days.

For those who have an expired license for 10 years or more, submit a driver’s license application (ADL) and a hard copy of your medical certificate (transmitted electronically in the form prescribed by the LTO issued by an LTO-accredited clinic)

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO ONLINE DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL.

Processing your driver’s license renewal not only saves you energy and money, but also because it is safe and more convenient. As of April 2021, there are 24 LTO offices that currently allow this service online. See the full list below.

Follow these steps when applying through the LTO’s Land Transportation Management System (LTMS) portal.

  1. Register through the LTMS portal: portal.lto.gov.ph.
  2. Click on the confirmation link that you will receive via email within 24 hours.
  3. Fill in your personal data sheet.
  4. In the control panel, click Licenses.
  5. Read the terms of use and click Accept.
  6. Fill out the online application form.
  7. In the License Classification, click on Driver’s License.
  8. Choose Renewal as the Application Type. Multiple applications are allowed, so you can choose more options.
  9. Submit your application form online.

STEP BY STEP GUIDE TO RENEWING YOUR DRIVING LICENCE AT LTO OFFICES

Submit the necessary requirements for your driver’s license renewal, and get your tail number.
Once your tail number is called, submit your requirements.
Confirm if the system data is correct.
Proceed to the cashier and pay the required fees.
Proceed to the coding and biometrics window to complete the form in the new system.
Get your Official Receipt and Driver’s License Card.
Record your information on the sign-in sheet.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL FOR OVERSEAS FILIPINOS.

An authorized representative may submit the requirements on your behalf. Please provide a Letter of Authorization.

Submit the necessary requirements for your driver’s license renewal, and obtain your tail number.
Submit the necessary requirements.
Go to the cashier and pay the necessary fees.
Receive the Official Receipt that will serve as your temporary driver’s license.
Within thirty (30) days after arrival in the Philippines, the licensee must submit all driver’s license renewal requirements, which include the online medical certificate from an accredited LTO clinic.
Wait for your name to be called for photo capture and biometrics.
Obtain your official receipt and driver’s license card.
Record your information on the sign-in sheet.

DRIVER’S LICENSE RENEWAL IN ARREARS

For those who have an expired driver’s license for more than two (2) years, you are considered to have a delinquent license. Therefore, this will have a different set of requirements, processes and fees.

ELIGIBILITY

Must be physically and mentally fit to drive a motor vehicle.
Must pass the practical and written test

REQUIREMENTS FOR THOSE WITH LICENSE IN ARREARS.

TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN RENEWING YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE

To make the driving licence renewal process go smoothly, here are some tips to remember before your booked appointment:

Prepare the requirements and fees beforehand.
Make sure you do not have any outstanding violations or cases that need to be resolved before your renewal appointment. This could cause delays in your license renewal.
Log into the LTMS portal to see if you have any violations that you need to resolve first.
Don’t get involved with fixers and scammers. Make sure you apply for renewal only at valid and authorized LTO offices. Also, get your medical certificates from LTO accredited clinics.
Renew your driving license before it actually expires to avoid paying penalties.
